Title
Cabin in Chalk Creek
Subject
Cabin in Chalk Creek, across from the Chalk Cliffs, about 1920. Locally known as the Lewellen cabin. Jack and his mother, Fannie, Lewellen bought it in 1946 and later he sold his share to his mother. Jack and his wife, Edith, lived in the cabin when they were first marries in 1948, while they were building their house in Buena Vista. Fannie Lewellen sold the cabin about 10 years later to someone who worked at Young Life Ranches. The cabin and fire pit barbeque were probably built by Charlie Thiele who did most of the rock work at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort. In the photo there was a picnic and barbeque going on and the people had ridden their horses to the cabin. The chef has a big cowboy hat on and there are other cowboy hats on the ground by the group under the tree. The cabin had an outhouse and a cistern for water. There is an irrigation ditch running above the cabin, that was used for water when it was flowing. Possibly the Bowen ditch. The cabin has been added on to and has a room with a large picture window looking out at the Chalk Cliffs. Description provided by Harold Dewalt and Tom Crocombe.
