Title
Mail Coming to St. Elmo from Tin Cup on the Stage Coach
Subject
A stage coach carrying mail returns to St. Elmo from the town of Tin Cup. A man is standing on the back of one of the horses, holding his hat at high as he can above his head, and still falls some feet short of the top of the snow bank next to him. The road has be cut through the snow, but if a horse broke through the crusted top of the snow and fell, they often couldn't be pulled back out and the stagecoach driver would have to shoot the animal. It was a very dangerous trip. Ed Vickerson drove it for many years, often using a horse-drawn tobaggan rather than a cart.
